Mile High Youth Corps’ mission is to help urban youth make a difference in themselves and their community through meaningful service opportunities and educational experiences.  Mile High Youth Corps (MHYC) is part of a network of more than 100 youth corps nationwide, which works to improve communities and the lives of youth by putting young people to work in urban neighborhoods, public parks and open spaces. MHYC serves Denver metro area youth ages 16-24. MHYC strives to meet the needs of a diverse community by offering year-round programs for high school graduates, school-year programs for out-of-school youth, summer programs for high school students and intensive specialized programs for college-aged young adults. Participants, called Corpsmembers, work on crews with 8-10 of their peers to complete community improvement and conservation projects for multiple city, state and nonprofit agencies. MHYC is a member of the National Association of Service and Conservation Corps and the Colorado Youth Corps Association and is the only accredited youth corps serving the Denver metro area.

Water Conservation Corpsmembers participate in an intensive, 22-week program that focuses on building technical skills and job readiness in a green job industry. Corpsmembers will work both on-site installing high-efficiency toilets (HETs) and in the classroom focusing on teamwork, community service, life skills, job readiness training, leadership development and career exploration. Corpsmembers will work on a small diverse team with a Crew Leader providing installation of new high-efficiency toilets throughout the Denver metro area for low-income residents. (Each installation helps save 140 gallons of water per week.)  Corpsmembers will participate in educational curriculum, job readiness training, receive hands-on technical training, and learn to problem solve diverse technical challenges in the work space.

Corpsmembers must possess a high school diploma or GED and be between 18 and 24 years of age.  Corpsmember must be able to lift 50 lbs., conduct repetitive hand and arm motions, and maneuver in tight spaces, including bending and kneeling.  A pre-employment background check and drug screen are required.

This is a temporary position from February 1 to July 2, 2010.  Corpsmembers will work Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Fridays 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  Corpsmembers earn an hourly wage of $8.00 for 32 hours per week.  Friday hours are unpaid, mandatory service hours that count toward earning the AmeriCorps Education Award.  Corpsmembers may be eligible for mid-program raise of $.50 and a $200 bonus at the end of term based on performance.  Benefits are not provided. A Corpsmember is eligible for a $1,250 AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of 450 hours of service.  Application deadline is January 22, 2010.
